What a welcome card is made of

The Classic card, pulled apart. These are its real layers, each drawn on its own by the bot.

  • Every part is a layerText, avatars, images, shapes, badges, bars and lists, stacked like a design tool. Drag, resize, turn and line them up.
  • Every layer can read a variableThe name is {user_name}, the line under it is Welcome to {server}!, and a bar can follow an XP variable.
  • Drawn fresh for every memberThe bot draws the card the moment someone joins, with their own name, avatar and member number.

Hey @Tom, welcome to BotGhost! You are our 1,204th member. Grab your roles in #roles and say hi.

About Tom

Brand new, invited by Fabian. Their account is 7 years old.

These are a few of the Welcomer's variables. In the dashboard the full list is one { away, in any message, DM or card.

Use it in my server

Everything a welcome needs

Each path can do any of these, and you only switch on what you want.

Messages and embeds

Plain text or full embeds with an image, colour and fields. Write up to 10 versions of a message and the bot picks one at random each time (Premium).

Roles, now or later

Give roles straight away, after a short wait or after the rules, take others away, and remove a role again after a number of days.

DMs with a fallback

A private welcome on any path. When a member has DMs turned off, skip them or post it in a channel instead.

Buttons on the welcome

A role button in blurple, grey, green or red, a Wave to say hi button anyone can press to wave at the new member, and reactions the bot adds itself.

Send me a test

Every path has a test button that runs it for you in your server, so you see the real message before anyone joins.

Move from the old Welcomer

Already using the old BotGhost Welcomer? Move my settings brings your channels, messages, card and roles across in one click.

How it compares to other welcome bots

MEE6, Welcomer, Koya, ProBot and the rest post a good welcome. The difference is how many kinds of welcome, and whose bot it is.

How to set it up

Live in six steps

From a fresh bot to a welcome in your server

  1. 1

Create your bot and invite it

Sign in to BotGhost, create a bot, and invite it with Send Messages, Embed Links, Attach Files and Manage Roles.
  2. 2

    Open the Welcomer

Go to Modules, click Welcomer and press Enable. Already using the old Welcomer? Press Move my settings on it to bring everything across.
  3. 3

Pick a channel and write the message

On the Joins tab, choose the channel and write your welcome. {user} mentions the new member and {server} is your server name.
  4. 4

Add a card, a DM or roles

Under Anything else?, switch on Add a card and pick a template, Send them a DM, or Give roles.
  5. 5

Turn on the paths you want

Returning member, Lots at once, Suspicious account, Milestone and the rest live in their own sections. Each one opens right where it is.
  6. 6

    Test it

Save, then press Send me a test under the preview. The bot runs that path for you in your server, exactly as a new member would see it.

How to set up a Discord welcome bot

What a welcome bot does, why one welcome for everyone is not enough, what makes a good welcome message, and how the cards work.

What a welcome bot does

A Discord welcome bot notices when someone joins your server and does something about it: posts a message in a welcome channel, sends a DM, gives a starting role, and often attaches an image card with the new member's name and avatar. Most also say goodbye when people leave.

Discord can post its own join message, but you cannot change the words, add a card or give roles with it. That is why nearly every community server has a welcome bot, and why the welcome is the first thing new members see from your server.

One welcome is not enough

Most welcome bots post the same message for everyone. That works until a raid fills the channel with fifty identical welcomes, a regular comes back and is greeted like a stranger, or a three day old spam account gets the same warm hello as a real person.

The Welcomer gives each of those its own path. Every join goes down the Everyone else path unless a special path fits first: Returning member, Lots at once, Suspicious account, Join and leave spam, Joined via an invite, Milestone, or Bot joined. Some run instead of the normal welcome and some as well, and four run later on, when someone accepts the rules, sends a first message, stays a while, or never accepts the rules.

Good welcome messages

A welcome works best when it is short, mentions the person, and tells them one thing to do next. A few that work well:

  • Hey {user}, welcome to {server}! Grab your roles in #roles and say hi in #general.
  • Welcome {user}, you are our {member_number_ordinal} member! Start with the pinned post in #start-here.
  • Welcome back, {user}! It has been {last_left_ago}, your roles are waiting for you.
  • Thanks for the boost, {user}! {server} is now at level {boost_tier}.

Welcome cards that look like your server

A welcome card is an image the bot draws for each new member, usually their avatar, their name and a line of text over a background. They make a welcome channel feel alive, and they are the part of a welcome bot people notice most.

The Card Studio starts you from 100 templates across 13 categories, then lets you change anything: drag layers, swap colours across the whole card in one go, add your own images and text, and fill any text with variables. The same cards work outside the Welcomer, for rank cards, leaderboards and profiles in your own commands.

Built from ordinary events

Under the page, the Welcomer is three ordinary events: Member Joined, Member Left and Member Boosted, with a branch for each path. You can open them in the builder at any time and see exactly what runs. With Premium you can add your own blocks under any path, so a welcome can also check a database, call an API, or give coins from your economy.
